Princeton, NJ was founded before the America Revolutionary. The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the first ones to inhabit the Princeton area. The city hosts Princeton University, that was founded in 1746 as the college of New jersey. Princeton University is the fourth oldest institution of higher education in the United States.
In January 1777, the Battle of Princeton took place where the current city is located. George Washington won the battle and pushed the British out of southern New Jersey. After the battle, Princeton hosted the first Legislature under the State Constitution to decide the State's seal, the governor, and all organization of its government. Princeton for centuries was crossed by the busy route that connected New York to Philadelphia. Today the borough is under the New Jersey municipal government. In 2011 the residents of the Borough of Princeton and the Township of Princeton voted to merge the two municipality into one. On January 1st, 2013, the new municipality was founded.
